Meet the Jagdale Family: The Visionaries Behind India’s Pioneering Single Malt Whisky, Amrut

Amrut, India’s very first single malt whisky, has garnered acclaim both nationally and internationally. This legacy brand, conceived by JN Radhakrishna Rao Jagdale in post-independence India, now ranks among the top-selling liquor brands. In 2001, Neelakanta Rao urged his son Rakshit, pursuing an MBA program in Newcastle, England, to explore the possibility of exporting their products to the UK. Tatlock & Thomson Ltd of Scotland served as consultants to help fine-tune the procedures at Amrut Distilleries in Bangalore. In blind trials conducted in Scotland, where the majority of tasters rated it favorably and compared it to Speyside single malt, Amrut single malt whisky performed well. The whisky made its debut in Glasgow, Scotland, on August 24, 2004, under the brand name Amrut Single Malt Whisky. Within two years of its UK launch, it expanded to Scandinavia and Western Europe. Amrut single malt whisky entered the Australian market in August 2009 and South Africa in 2008, marking the beginning of its global dominance.
