DMK’s anti-NEET hunger strike underway in Tamil Nadu
The ruling DMK on Sunday launched a state-wide hunger strike to demand the cancellation of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). Keeping in mind the impact of NEET exam on the mental health of children and their parents, the DMK has decided to go on strike.
Launched under the chairmanship of Udhayanidhi Stalin
A hunger strike began across Tamil Nadu under the chairmanship of State Minister and head of the party’s youth wing, Udhayanidhi Stalin. Udhayanidhi was joined by senior DMK leaders and cabinet ministers Duraimurugan, MA Subramaniam and PK Sekhar Babu, party MPs, MLAs as well as Chennai Mayor Priya R to register the protest at Valluvar Kottam.
At the same time, DMK party leaders observed a minute’s silence for the NEET students who committed suicide in Tamil Nadu. Also protested against Governor RN Ravi for refusing to ban NEET exam in the state.
A collage of medical students who committed suicide due to depression over NEET exam including S Anitha of Ariyalur was displayed on the stage and paid floral tributes to them.
A state-wide hunger strike is being observed demanding the cancellation of the Central Eligibility Test. Duraimurugan said that NEET is against the welfare of the students. We have been opposing this for a long time. He said that despite repeated requests, the Center is not heeding the requests of the people of Tamil Nadu against NEET.
It is mandatory to clear NEET exam to get admission in MBBS and BDS courses in the country. Admission in medical college is done on the basis of NEET score, but Tamil Nadu government wants to abolish NEET exam itself. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin recently wrote a letter to President Draupadi Murmu in this regard. In a letter to the President regarding his Anti-NEET Bill, he has said that if our Bill was approved, admission would be based on 12th marks and students would be saved from committing suicide.
