NSA against dentist held 5 months ago in conversion row

Lucknow: The National Security Act (NSA) was imposed against a dentist who was arrested in July this year in connection with a conversion racket.

Saurabh Khurana, who took the name Abdullah Ahmad after he adopted Islam while studying dentistry at Aligarh Muslim University, was arrested from Khoda colony after the father of a woman accused his daughter’s colleagues of trying to convert her at a call centre.

The complainant had told police his 25-year-old daughter, who was a Hindu, had started offering namaz and adopted other Islamic practices. A case was registered on July 8 under the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Religious Conversion Act against Mohammad Rahil (alias Rahul Agrawal) and Mohammad Musheer — both of whom are from Delhi — and Abdullah of Palwal in Haryana.

Citing preliminary investigation, police said the trio were part of a gang that persuaded youngsters to adopt Islam. On August 8, the NSA was imposed on Rahil and Musheer.

According to the FIR, Rahil had met the woman while working at a call centre in July last year and entered into a relationship with her. Both wanted to marry, but Rahil apparently asked the woman to convert to Islam. Once she did, Rahil made a video call to the woman and married her in keeping with Islamic customs, police said.

Her father went to the cops when he noticed changes in the woman’s behaviour. Police said Rahil was already married and had entered into a physical relationship with his colleague before asking her for marriage. He allegedly had a few pictures of the woman that he used for blackmailing her.

Abdullah, police said, headed this gang. In 2014, he had adopted Islam while studying at AMU and was running a clinic in Aligarh when he was arrested last year. While Rahil worked at a call centre, Musheer gave private tuitions to boys and girls.

It was Abdullah, police said, who persuaded Rahil to convert to Islam. Rahil’s first wife is the sister of Abdullah’s wife.

Police commissioner Ajay Kumar Mishra said they had sent Abdullah’s file to the district magistrate for approval. The NSA was imposed on him after the district administration approved the police’s request.

Till December 21 this year, the Ghaziabad administration had imposed NSA on 10 persons, five of whom were arrested in connection with conversion rackets.
