On NH to rescue accident victims, 2 women mowed by truck

Lucknow: Two women, part of a group that had gone to save a couple injured critically after being hit by a speeding truck, were crushed to death by another speeding truck on the highway in Jaswantnagar area of Etawah district in the early hours of Saturday. One other woman, who sustained serious wounds, along with the injured couple, is undergoing treatment at a government hospital.

The incident occurred near the Kanhai village under the limits of Jaswantnagar police station. A group of people had gone to rescue a critically injured couple whose motorcycle was hit by a speeding truck around 5am along the National Highway. Those who had gone to rescue included Nema Devi (43) and Mithilesh Kumari (45), who died on the spot, while Sheetla Devi (55) was injured severely. The locals rushed her and the injured couple to the nearby government hospital for treatment. Their condition was stated to be serious.

Drivers of both vehicles fled from the spot. Angry locals put the bodies on the highway and blocked it for a couple of hours demanding compensation for the families of the deceased women. They also sought a crackdown on speeding vehicles.

“We have launched search to track down the drivers of both vehicles. FIR has been registered. The bodies have been sent for post mortem,” said sub-divisional magistrate Kaushal Kumar, adding, “We persuaded those blocking the traffic on the National Highway to allow movement.
