More than 100 people have been arrested for their involvement in riots targeting Christians over alleged blasphemy in Pakistan’s Faisalabad. Pakistan-based Dawn has reported quoting officials that several churches were vandalized in Jaranwala district of Pakistan’s Faisalabad on Wednesday on charges of blasphemy. A Punjab government spokesperson said in a statement that the provincial government has also ordered a high-level inquiry into the incident.

Earlier, Punjab’s Interim Information Minister Amir Mir had said that “dozens of people who disturbed the peace in the area have been detained”. In a statement, the minister said the violence in Jaranwala was perpetrated under a “well-planned conspiracy”. “There was a plan to disturb peace by inciting public sentiments,” Mir was quoted as saying by Geo News. Angry protesters reacted strongly after the desecration of the Holy Quran and said the situation in Faisalabad is now under control.
The provincial information minister also said that the investigation into the tragic incident of desecration of the holy book is going on fast, adding that anyone who tries to take the law into their hands will be immediately arrested. He said the security of the churches has been tightened and law enforcement has been deployed in large numbers. According to Geo News report, more than 6,000 policemen and rangers personnel are present in the affected areas.
