Pick-up van crashes into patrolling vehicle, SI

Lucknow: A 54-year-old sub-inspector died and his colleague was injured after a pickup van crashed into their patrolling vehicle in Sector 2 a little after Sunday midnight.

The van driver was arrested from the spot itself.

Sub-inspectors Ram Kishore Sharma and Vijay Ahlawat and head constable Naresh were out patrolling in a Jeep on New Year’s eve. The vehicle was moving slowly when a rashly driven pickup van rammed into it from behind around 2am

Sharma and Ahlawat, who were seated behind, suffered injuries. “Both of them were rushed to Kailash Hospital in Sector 27. Sharma had a head injury and a fracture on the right leg. He was undergoing treatment when his blood pressure started to drop all of a sudden. He was shifted to the ICU, where he succumbed to the injuries,” said Dhruv Bhushan Dubey, the SHO of Phase 1 police station.

Sharma’s family later informed police that the sub-inspector was undergoing treatment for a heart ailment.

“After an autopsy was done, his body was sent to his hometown in Meerut for the last rites. A 1991-batch cop, he was transferred from Saharanpur to Noida only a month ago,” the SHO said.

A case was registered against the van driver — identified by police as Brijesh — under sections 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 279 (rash driving) of the IPC at Phase 1 police station.

“He was taken into custody and legal proceedings were initiated against him,” Dubey said.
