PoC app to make cops’ cellphones function as wireless sets

Lucknow: A new mobile based application that will help policemen communicate without wireless sets was launched in Lucknow for a trial and test phase. “The app ‘Push-to-Talk over Cellular’ (PoC) will help all police personnel connect directly, making mobile phones useful as wireless sets. A line testing/live trial was done at a seminar in the Reserve Police Lines on Monday where policemen were explained about the working of the app.

The system, based on the lines of police of France and Finland, has been introduced by the radio headquarters wing of the UP police.

“The Push-to-Talk feature will enable one-to-one discussions, while also displaying the live location of users through the GPS in the app. Police can upload a video of an incident, which can then be seen by the higher authority using Push-to-Video. The live location and video of any incident site can be seen by the police officer at the same time,” said Sanjay Tarade, director general of police (Telecom), UP.

“Each police personnel will have a unique QR code through which this app will be installed in the mobile phone,” he added.

Tarade said that the system has proved useful in Meerut and Bareilly police zones during Kanwariya Yatra.
