Rats nibble at eyes of body kept at Jhansi med college morgue, kin stage protest

Lucknow: A protest was staged outside the Jhansi Medical College morgue after family members of a suicide victim found that rats had apparently nibbled at the eyes and toes of the body. The medical college administration ordered a probe into the incident to fix responsibility for the lapse.

Sanjay Jain (40), a resident of Shivpuri district of Madhya Pradesh, had consumed poison a few days ago and was brought to the medical college for treatment. Sanjay died during treatment on Wednesday night and his body was sent for postmortem later.

When the relatives of the deceased went to claim the body, they were shocked to see Sanjay’s eyes gouged out and parts of his feet nibbled at by the rodents.

The incident caused embarrassment to the medical college administration after the family members staged a protest. The protesters were later joined by former Union minister and Congress politician Pradeep Jain, who termed the incident “inhuman” and a result of gross negligence.

College principal Dr Narendra Singh Senger said, “I had already issued instructions that bodies should be preserved in deep freezers, specially provided for this purpose. I have also instructed the chief medical superintendent to take the matter very seriously. Whoever is found guilty will be punished. I have also issued a fresh SOP for the protection of bodies, which has to be followed strictly.”
