Suspected ISI agent brought from Bihar, sent to 6-day police custody

Lucknow: The team of Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorist Squad (UP ATS) that had gone to Bihar to seek the custody of a suspected ISI agent, Izahrul, returned to Lucknow with the accused and produced him before a magistrate on Saturday.

The court sent Izahrul to 6-day police remand. Lodged in Bettiah jail in a separate case, Izahrul’s name had surfaced during interrogation with Amrit Gill (25) and Riazuddin (36), who were arrested on November 26 following allegations of sharing sensitive information about the Indian Army with the Pakistani intelligence agency Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).

Additional director general, ATS, Mohit Agarwal said that all the three suspects had been sent to 6-day police remand and they would be interrogated together.

“Gill was in direct contact with ISI agents and used to pass on sensitive and restricted information related to the Indian Army to ISI. In exchange for his services, Gill received financial help from his Pakistani handlers through Riazuddin and Izahrul,” he said.

The ADG said that an analysis of Riazuddin’s bank accounts revealed that approximately Rs 70 lakh had been deposited into one of his accounts from unknown sources between March and April last year and the money was subsequently transferred to various other bank accounts.

ATS had arrested an accused, Shailendra Pratap Singh Chauhan, in September 2023 for allegedly spying for ISI. During Chauhan’s interrogation, ATS came to know about an engineer and hacker Wasiullah Khan (25) who was also in contact with ISI and was apprehended in Lucknow in the first week of November.

Sustained interrogation of Wasiullah led to the arrest of Amrit Gill (25) and Riazuddin (36) in November last week.

“We are collating the reports received after interrogation of all the suspects in the case and will add the report from the forensic lab regarding mobile handsets and other materials seized from them,” an ATS officer said, adding that they were trying to identify the ISI handler with whom the accused were connected.
