The boat, which travels all night from Surat Thani district to reach the popular tourist destination of Koh Tao, was nearing the Thai shore. Suddenly, one of the passengers heard a loud noise and smelled smoke. Passenger Maithri Promjampha said that in less than five minutes, she saw smoke and fire erupting, prompting people to start screaming and sounding the alarm.
