Traditions on Hariyali Teej
The first Sawan festival after marriage has special significance for newly married girls. On the occasion of Hariyali Teej, girls are called to Pihar from their in-laws’ house. A day before Hariyali Teej, daughters and sisters are sent to Sindhara, their in-laws’ place. In which there is omen of clothes, jewellery, makeup items, henna, fruits and sweets.
There is special importance of applying henna and wearing red-green bangles on this day. Women and girls apply mehndi on their hands in various artefacts. Alta is also applied on the feet on this day. This is a sign of women’s honeymoon.
On Hariyali Teej, married women touch their mother-in-law’s feet and give her suhagi. If mother-in-law is not there, then it is given to sister-in-law or any other old woman. On this day women worship Goddess Parvati wearing makeup and new clothes. On Hariyali Teej, women and girls swing on swings in the fields or gardens and dance and sing folk songs.
