The National Library, which was inaugurated 168 years ago in Kolkata, is India’s largest. Hundreds of tourists visit it every year.

The inception of Kolkata Public Library took place on March 21, 1839. It marked India’s first library where Indians were granted permission to read. The primary aim of this library was to provide easy access and facilities to books for children and researchers. At that time, Indians were not allowed to enter any public library, which necessitated the establishment of this library.
