The White House has emphasized that Afghanistan’s Taliban must fulfill its commitments to gain legitimacy in the eyes of the international community,

following recent remarks by a Taliban-appointed minister asserting gender inequality based on Sharia law.

John Kirby, Coordinator for Strategic Communications at the National Security Council in the White House, stated during a press conference, “We’ve not recognized them as a governing power in Afghanistan. They want that. They want legitimacy. Then they need to meet their commitments.” He further pointed out the challenges of governing effectively and maintaining a functional economy when half of the workforce, women, are excluded from participation, adding, “So, we’re going to keep holding them accountable for their commitments.”
