Two owners booked for deaths in lift collapse

Lucknow: A day after two persons died when a makeshift lift at an under-construction marriage hall at Vrindavan Colony Sector-6 on Rae Bareli Road collapsed on Sunday, a case of causing death due to negligence was lodged against the two owners of the building on Monday.

Additional DCP, east zone, Syed Ali Abbas, said a case under section IPC 304 A (causing death due to negligence) was registered against the owners of the hotel– SP Singh and Ravi Wadhwa– as they did not provide safety gadgets/followed safety norms on construction of high-rise buildings.

The case was registered on the complaint of Mansha Devi, the widow of one of the victims Bharatlal Lodhi (41) of Kusmaura village in Nigohan.

The other victim was identified as contractor Yogesh Kumar Mishra (42) of Gonda district.

In her complaint, Mansha Devi said she got a call about her husband’s death around 3pm on Sunday.

“On reaching the scene, I was told that the lift by which the labourers and building material were taking up was old and its wire (rope) was rusted. The rope snapped when it was going up,” she said and alleged that her husband was not provided timely treatment at a hospital leading to his death.

In the incident, a Bihar native Pappu had suffered serious injuries and is still under treatment.

The incident had occurred when three people were taking building material from the lift to the top floor of the under-construction building and the rope of the lift snapped. Initial investigation had revealed that the lift had fallen from a height of 30ft.

Sources said the work was going on for the last several days and it also came to the notice that the building material was being taken from the lift without following the safety standards.
