Undertrial prisoner found hanging in Lucknow jail

Lucknow: A 35-year-old undertrial prisoner (UTP) accused in an attempt to murder case was found hanging inside Lucknow jail in Gosainganj on Monday evening.

Police said the UTP identified as Ajay Kumar of Unnao district was lodged in the jail since last month in an attempt to murder case reported from Krishnanagar.

On Monday, he was found hanging from the ceiling of a cell with a shirt, said the jail authorities.

A Lucknow jail official said Ajay Kumar was lodged in the isolation barrack and suffering from some mental issues. “He rarely spoke or interacted with anybody and often used to go berserk in the general barrack. Hence, he was shifted to an isolation barrack and undergoing treatment in the jail hospital” said the jail official.

Meanwhile, his brother Vijay alleged that Ajay was falsely framed by his wife, who had been living separately since long. “His wife and son called him to meet at a place in Krishna Nagar and then framed him in the case,” alleged the deceased’s brother. He further alleged that Ajay was killed inside the jail but failed to explain any apparent reason for the same.

Gosaiganj SHO DC Mishra said police sent the body for autopsy and began an investigation into the incident.
