The Backward Classes Commission has taken note of the inclusion of a higher number of Muslim castes in the state list of backward classes in West Bengal, contrary to the population, and the Commission has also expressed serious concern over the protection of the rights of the original OBC (Other Backward Class) castes in Bengal. Keeping this in mind, the West Bengal government has proposed 87 new castes, including 78 Muslim and only 9 Hindu castes.
