Lucknow: A 41-year-old woman was sentenced to life imprisonment on Thursday by a district court in Uttar Pradesh’s Hardoi district for the murder of her husband, Kamlesh Kumar (42), in 2018. The convict, Geeta Kumari, was also fined Rs 10,000.
Geeta had killed Kamlesh by slitting his throat with a sickle following a domestic dispute, Majhila SHO Subrat Tiwari said. She fled the scene after the crime but was later arrested. Police had filed a chargesheet within 15 days of the murder. The murder weapon was recovered from the scene and sent for forensic analysis. The results confirmed that the sickle was used in the crime, providing crucial evidence against Geeta, police said.
In her statement to cops, Geeta said she and Kamlesh would have frequent arguments over his drinking habits and tendencies to squander her hard-earned money on liquor. On June 10, 2018, they fought over the same issue and in a fit of rage, she killed her husband.
Hardoi district judge Raj Kumar Singh announced the quantum of punishment based on the testimony of eight witnesses, including the victim’s father, said additional district government counsel Suraj Pal Singh, adding: “It took 82 hearings to give its verdict.”
The couple have five children aged between 26 and 18.
