George Joseph was born in Kerala, but spent a major part of his life in Madurai, where he died in 1938. His leadership of the struggle, though being brief, was crucial. He foresaw the arrest of leaders and invited Periyar to Vaikom to lead the movement. After the prison term, he returned to Madurai and remained part of the freedom struggle
