Five years before taking on the role of the President of the country, Ram Nath Kovind, who was then responsible for a committee tasked with exploring the possibility of ‘One Nation, One Election’ in India, engaged in vigorous debates and gained unanimous support among all political parties. Addressing a joint session of Parliament on January 29, 2018, Kovind expressed concern about the frequent elections held in some parts of the country, which had adverse effects on the economy and development, and called for greater awareness among citizens about the state of governance in the nation.
