Cash van guard killed, Rs 39L robbed in Mirzapur heist

Involvement Of Criminals From MP Suspected: Police

Lucknow: In a daring daylight heist, four armed miscreants riding two motorbikes shot dead a cash van guard and injured three others outside Axis Bank’s Beltar branch in Uttar Pradesh’s Mirzapur district, and escaped with a metal box and a bag containing Rs 39 lakh on Tuesday afternoon.

Additional director general (Varanasi zone) Ram Kumar said, “Ten police teams from the entire zone have been engaged to work out the case, in which, involvement of criminals from Madhya Pradesh has come to light during an initial investigation.”

CCTV footage collected by cops from the bank and nearby buildings in the Beltar market area showed that cash van guard Jai Singh was looking inside the van’s safe in which boxes and bags containing cash were kept. In the meantime, four miscreants, wearing helmets, came on two motorcycles. One of the miscreants opened fire on the guard. When cashiers Akhilesh and Rajnish Maurya rushed to help the guard, the looters opened fire on them too.

Later, when the robbers were trying to escape with the cash box and bag, a passerby, Bahadur Gond, tried to stop them. He was hit and injured before the miscreants escaped. The robbery led to chaos in the market. Locals rushed the injured guard and other persons to the district hospital.

On getting information, Mirzapur SP Abhinandan reached the spot and visited the hospital to check on the injured persons. Mirzapur DIG RP Singh and the ADG zone also visited the spot later. “During treatment, the cash van guard succumbed while the condition of the three other injured is stable. After the incident, a massive checking drive was launched by sealing the district borders,” said the SP.
