The Union Finance Ministry said that the Directorate General of Goods and Services Tax Intelligence (DGGI), being the lead intelligence and investigation agency looking into GST tax evasion cases across the country, has detected evasion of government revenue since November, 2020. To prevent the practice of claiming fraudulent Input Tax Credit (ITC), a special campaign was launched and active investigation of ITC evasion was continued.
From April, 2020 to September, 2023, more than 6,000 fake ITC cases involving GST evasion of more than Rs 57,000 crore have been detected and a total of 500 people have been arrested. Since June 2023, DGGI has Special emphasis has been laid on identifying and arresting the gangsters and syndicates operating across the country. Cases were solved using data analysis with the help of modern technological tools leading to arrest of tax evaders.
