Lucknow: A UP police constable was killed Monday evening during an encounter with a wanted criminal in Kannauj.
Sachin Rathi took a bullet fired by Ashok Yadav alias Munna and his son at the police team in Dharni Dhirpur Nagariya village.
Rathi died during treatment at a private hospital in Kanpur. He was posted at Vishungarh police station in Kannauj. A native of Muzaffarnagar, Rathi was recruited in 2019 and was to get married in February. His brother is also a police constable in Kannauj.
Yadavand his son were eventually arrested. They suffered gunshot wounds in the legs and were taken to Kannauj district hospital. Yadav’s wife has also been held.
“Munna (Yadav) has over 20 cases of murder, robbery, dacoity under the Gangsters Act against him and was on the run after getting bail in a case,” Kannauj SP Amit Kumar Anand said.
The cops were tipped off about Yadav’s presence in a house in Dharni Dhirpur Nagariya. Rathi and the others from Vishungarh police station surrounded the house and asked Yadav to surrender but he opened fire. Two pistols and a rifle were seized from the house after he and his son were subdued and caught, the SP said.
