Lucknow: A day after an 18-year-old boy hanged himself to death after being scolded by his father, his two brothers — aged 22 and 26 years — also tried to take their lives at a village in Sambhal district on Friday. The body of one of them was found hanging from a tree while the other brother is battling for life in hospital.
Vijay Singh Yadav of Aurangabad village under Dhanari limits told police that his youngest son Paan Singh — a class 12 student — had a quarrel over leaving home for some work with his elder brother Brajesh on Thursday. Thereafter, Yadav, a local farmer, scolded the 18-year-old. The teenager was later found hanging in the village.
Police said the family didn’t inform cops about Paan’s death. They brought the body home and when Brajesh saw his brother, he “felt guilty” and locked himself inside his room. He tried to hang himself with a rope but was rescued, police added.
Sambhal SP, Kuldeep Singh Gunawat, said, “The eldest brother Munish (26), who used to work in Chandigarh, meanwhile, returned home on Friday after hearing the news. After de-boarding the train at his village, Munish made a call home. Then, instead of going home he went to his farm and killed himself by hanging from a tree.”
The SP added: “We came to know about the incident through local villagers and by the time we reached the place, the family had already cremated them. We’re monitoring the health condition of the survivor. Though no formal police complaint has been lodged, we’ve submitted a report to the SDM about the incident.” Brajesh has been put on a ventilator and the next 24 hours will be critical for him, doctors said on Friday.
Their mother, Batasha Devi, who is in shock, said, “My sons used to love and care for each other. I don’t know what led to the quarrel and why they took the extreme step. I am not able to forgive myself… I couldn’t do anything to save my sons.”
