New Delhi, July 5 (IANS) In a momentous occasion for Indian Navy and nation’s maritime traditions, the naval training ship INS Sudarshini sailed into New York Port on Sunday.
INS Sudarshini, standing tall as the proud symbol of India’s maritime legacy, is currently on a historic 10-month maritime voyage.
Its arrival in New York waters came as part of the vessel’s transoceanic expedition ‘Lokayan 2026’, reflecting Indian Navy’s commitment to strengthening maritime cooperation, building international goodwill and deepening engagement with partner navies.
During the grand ‘Parade of Sail’ held on the historic Hudson river in New York, the INS Sudarshini proudly displayed the Tricolour, showcasing India’s rich maritime heritage and centuries-old seafaring traditions.
As the beautiful ship sailed past New York’s iconic skyline, it appeared not merely as a naval vessel but as a living symbol of India’s millennia-old maritime traditions, adventurous voyages, and global connections.
Adorned with Indian Tricolour, INS Sudarshini reminded the world that India’s bond with the seas extends back to ancient civilisations and historic trade routes.
Throughout its transoceanic journey, INS Sudarshini is visiting ports in several countries.
“This 10-month-long trans-oceanic voyage reflects the Indian Navy’s vision of viewing the seas not just through the lens of security, but also as a medium for friendship, cooperation, and cultural exchange. The expedition aims to strengthen maritime ties with various nations, foster naval cooperation, and showcase India’s maritime heritage on the global stage,” a press statement said.
During this voyage, the Indian contingent is establishing significant dialogues with various navies and maritime organisations.
INS Sudarshini’s arrival in New York is also linked to special occasion.
The United States is celebrating the 250th anniversary of its Independence this year, marked by grand events such as the ‘United States International Naval Review 250’ and ‘Sail Forth 250’. Naval and training vessels from across the globe are participating in these celebrations.
Prior to arrival in New York, INS Sudarshini successfully participated in the ‘Sail 250’ events held in Norfolk and Baltimore.
During these events, the ship showcased India’s maritime traditions, naval training systems, and cultural heritage to the international community.
The vessel is currently stationed in Brooklyn, where thousands of spectators and maritime experts are viewing it up close; the ship’s traditional structure and majestic appearance have become a major attraction for the public.
Through the ‘Lokayan 2026’ expedition, the Indian Navy is propagating the message of India’s glorious maritime traditions, friendship, and cooperation across the world’s oceans.
