Four new link expressways to be built at a cost of ₹17,542 crore

At a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, approval was granted for the selection of developers for four key link expressway projects to further strengthen Uttar Pradesh’s expressway network.

To be developed by the Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA) under the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) model, the projects are expected to entail a total expenditure of approximately ₹17,542.06 crore. Their construction will improve connectivity between the western, central and eastern regions of the state, while making travel to and from the state capital, Lucknow, and the National Capital Region more convenient and safer.

The four projects approved by the Cabinet for the selection of developers include Packages 1 and 2 of the Farrukhabad Link Expressway, the link expressway connecting the Agra-Lucknow Expressway with the Purvanchal Expressway, Packages 1 and 2 of the Jhansi Link Expressway, and Packages 1 and 2 of the Jewar Link Expressway.

The construction of these projects is targeted for completion within approximately three years after the selection of developers. Maintenance arrangements will be in place for the subsequent five years. The state government will bear the total estimated expenditure on the construction and maintenance of the projects. No financial contribution from the Central Government is envisaged under the proposal.

Developers have been selected on the basis of the lowest financial bids submitted by the bidders. Under the EPC model, emphasis will be placed on ensuring the prescribed quality standards and adherence to project timelines, alongside construction.

With the objective of developing a fast, convenient and safe transport system in Uttar Pradesh, UPEIDA is undertaking the construction of greenfield expressways. At present, five expressways developed by UPEIDA are operational, while eight more are proposed to be developed.

The new link expressways aim to improve connectivity with the operational expressways and make travel between different regions of the state more convenient.

The Farrukhabad and Jhansi Link Expressways are expected to strengthen connectivity in the respective regions. Meanwhile, the project connecting the Agra-Lucknow Expressway with the Purvanchal Expressway will facilitate faster movement between the western and eastern parts of the state. The Jewar Link Expressway will help improve connectivity between the Jewar region and the wider expressway network.

The implementation of the four projects is expected to generate approximately 760 lakh man-days of employment, both directly and indirectly. Construction activities are likely to create employment opportunities for workers and in transportation, construction material supply and other associated sectors.
