Warehouses with a capacity of 65,000 metric tonnes to be built in Bundelkhand, providing relief to farmers

The Yogi government has taken an important step to ensure safe produce storage and fair prices for farmers in Bundelkhand. At the Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday, the Cabinet approved a proposal to provide the Uttar Pradesh State Warehousing Corporation with land free of cost to build warehouses in Jhansi and Lalitpur. The two districts will see warehouses with a total capacity of 65,000 metric tonnes.

Sharing details of the Cabinet decision, Finance Minister Suresh Kumar Khanna said this would provide significant relief to farmers. In a recent Cooperation Department review meeting, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath directed the concerned departments to coordinate, make land available for warehouse construction in Bundelkhand, and promote storage facilities.

The government will construct warehouses with capacities of about 30,000 metric tonnes in Jhansi and 35,000 metric tonnes in Lalitpur. For this purpose, the Uttar Pradesh State Warehousing Corporation under the Cooperation Department will be provided land free of cost. These facilities will enable safe, scientific storage of pulses, oilseeds, Shree Anna (sorghum and pearl millet), and other agricultural produce.

Farmers in Bundelkhand face difficulties and losses due to drought and uneven rainfall. With adequate storage facilities, farmers can safely store their produce during adverse market conditions and sell it at the right time. This will help preserve the quality and value of agricultural produce, strengthen the agricultural marketing system, and increase farmers’ income.

The Cabinet decision will help minimize agricultural produce wastage and significantly improve the supply chain. The construction and operation of warehouses will also generate direct and indirect self-employment opportunities at the local level through transportation, loading and unloading, maintenance, and other supporting activities.
