Lucknow, Aug 4 (IANS) A Special CBI Court in Lucknow on Tuesday sentenced the then railway official to rigorous imprisonment for four years with a fine of Rs 20,000 in a bribery case dating back to 2016, an official said.
Girijesh Kumar Gaur, the then Assistant Divisional Signal and Telecommunication Engineer (ADSTE), North Central Railway, Banda, Uttar Pradesh, was sentenced to imprisonment after being convicted under the anti-corruption law, the official said in a statement.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) registered the case on May 5, 2016, based on a complaint alleging that the accused demanded a bribe of Rs 20,000 for passing and sanctioning the complainant’s bills worth Rs 80,000 in respect of the vehicle engaged by him under contract with the office of ADSTE, NCR, Banda.
The complainant said that Gaur demanded the bribe in two instalments – 10,000 prior to sanction of bills and 10,000 after sanction of bills of the transporter.
The CBI laid a trap on May 27, 2016 and caught Gaur red-handed while demanding and accepting illegal gratification of Rs 9,700, against the alleged demand of Rs 10,000, at his residence, said a statement.
After completion of investigation, the CBI filed a charge sheet on June 24, 2016 against Gaur.
The Special Court, after the trial, convicted and sentenced Gaur accordingly, the CBI said.
In a separate case, a Special CBI Court in Andhra Pradesh’s Kurnool on Monday sentenced a former official of Kadapa Airport to Rigorous Imprisonment for three years with a fine of Rs 50,000 in a nine-year-old bribery case.
The Special Court sentenced Mukundagiri Rangachari Srinivasan, the then Assistant General Manager (Air Traffic Management) and Officiating Airport Director, Kadapa Airport, for demanding a bribe of Rs 50,000 from a contractor, said a CBI statement.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) registered the instant case on July 24, 2015 against the accused.
It was alleged that the accused abused his official position as a public servant and demanded a bribe of Rs 50,000 from the complainant for processing the pending bills at an early date and for not initiating the process of blacklisting the complainant’s firm.
