On Thursday, during the Dahi Handi celebrations, at least 35 ‘Govindas’ engaged in the formation of human pyramids in various parts of Mumbai sustained injuries, according to an official statement.
The Dahi Handi festival is observed with traditional enthusiasm to commemorate Krishna Janmashtami, the birth anniversary of Lord Krishna. As a part of these festivities, Govindas or Dahi Handi participants assemble multi-tiered human pyramids to break ‘dahi handis’ (earthen pots filled with curd) suspended in the air.
The celebrations, commencing in the morning, will extend into the night. Competitions are held at numerous locations throughout the city, offering monetary rewards to the Govinda teams that successfully break the dahi handis. However, during the process of forming human pyramids, there exists the risk of participants falling and sustaining injuries, sometimes of a critical nature.
