New Delhi: On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the adoption of the New Delhi G20 Leaders’ Summit Declaration, highlighting the consensus achieved during the summit. He extended his congratulations to the Sherpas and ministers involved in achieving this consensus.
“I have received good news. Due to the hard work of our team, consensus has been built on New Delhi G20 Leaders’ Summit Declaration. My proposal is to adopt this leadership declaration. I announce to adopt this declaration. On this occasion, I congratulate my Sherpa, ministers, who worked hard for it and made it possible,” he stated.
The announcement of the declaration’s adoption was met with enthusiastic applause.
During his opening remarks at the Summit, Prime Minister Modi emphasized the potential for the 21st century to reshape the world and address longstanding challenges with a human-centric approach.
The joint G20 communique urged all states to act in accordance with the UN charter and refraining from the threat or use of force for territorial acquisition, emphasizing the inadmissibility of the use or threat of nuclear weapons.
Notably, the declaration revealed differences within the group regarding Russia’s actions in Ukraine, with several countries, including India, opting not to unconditionally condemn Moscow’s actions.
Prime Minister Modi also invited the African Union to become a permanent member of the G20, strengthening the position of the Global South within the group. This decision follows strong support for the AU’s inclusion, with the AU becoming the second regional bloc to achieve permanent membership in the G20, after the European Union.
US President Joe Biden had previously advocated for the AU’s inclusion, emphasizing its importance in global discussions. AU Commission head Moussa Faki Mahamat welcomed this development and stressed the significance of the AU’s participation in addressing global challenges. Kenyan President William Ruto emphasized that the AU’s membership in the G20 will give African interests and perspectives a voice in this crucial body.
