Operation Trinetra’ strengthens smart policing in UP under Yogi Government, surveillance enhanced through 12.85 lakh CCTV cameras

To strengthen law and order in Uttar Pradesh and provide a safe environment for ordinary citizens, Yogi Government has focused on integrating policing with technology, public participation and swift action. Installation of more than 12.85 lakh CCTV cameras across the state under ‘Operation Trinetra’ marks a significant step towards smart policing. Meanwhile, the establishment of women’s help desks at every police station, the operation of 8,694 women’s beats, and extensive action under the Anti-Romeo campaign have further strengthened the security system.

Yogi Government has placed special emphasis on using technology to modernize the police system. Launched in this direction, ‘Operation Trinetra’ has emerged as an important means of enhancing the utility of CCTV cameras in crime control, monitoring suspicious activities and investigating incidents. From July 10, 2023, to September 30, 2026, the state installed more than 12.85 lakh CCTV cameras. Installing cameras on such a large scale has laid a strong foundation for surveillance in public places and sensitive areas.

CCTV cameras can help gather evidence after criminal incidents, identify suspects, and guide police investigations. Alongside this technology-based initiative, the government aims to strengthen the police’s reach and surveillance capabilities.

Women’s safety and swift action on their complaints are among the Yogi Government’s key priorities. Women’s help desks have been established at all police stations across the state so women can comfortably bring their problems to the police’s attention. In addition, the deployment of women police personnel and women’s beat system have been used to strengthen communication between the police and women.

The state has appointed 19,045 women police personnel and allocated 8,694 women’s beats. This has strengthened the system for increasing police outreach to women, understanding their concerns and addressing security-related complaints at the local level. The combination of women’s help desks and women’s beats is an important step towards making policing more sensitive and citizen-centric.

The Anti-Romeo campaign has undertaken extensive checks and actions to ensure the safety of women and young women. From April 1, 2022, to September 30, 2026, the campaign conducted checks at 87,45,228 locations and checked more than 4.83 crore individuals. During this period, authorities registered 19,554 cases, took legal action against 24,434 individuals, and issued warnings to more than 1.71 crore individuals.

Economic action against mafia and organized crime has also become an important part of UP’s policing strategy. As of September 25, 2026, authorities were monitoring action against 68 mafia figures identified at the state level, along with members of their gangs and associates.

According to the UP Police, these actions included seizing or demolishing properties worth more than Rs. 4,558 crore, or freeing them from illegal occupation. Police took action against about 1,508 members of mafia gangs and their associates, registered 923 cases, and arrested more than 653 accused. Action was also taken under the Gangsters Act, the Goonda Act and the National Security Act.

From March 20, 2017, to September 30, 2026, a total of 316 criminals were killed and 12,821 were injured in encounters during various operations. During the same period, 18 police personnel lost their lives, while 1,949 police personnel were injured.

During the tenure of the Yogi Government, emphasis has been placed on police activity and accountability, along with action against criminals. To ensure effective law enforcement, every action must comply with prescribed legal procedures and accountability requirements. The success of crime control should also be assessed based on citizens’ safety, crime prevention, and the effective functioning of the judicial process.

An Anti-Narcotics Task Force has been constituted in the state to prevent drug trafficking. Six anti-narcotics police stations have been established in Ghazipur, Barabanki, Gorakhpur, Meerut, Saharanpur and Jhansi. In addition, the campaign established eight regional operational units and one sub-unit in Noida.

From January 1, 2022, to September 27, 2026, a total of 38,625 cases were registered during the campaign against narcotic substances. The estimated value of the seized narcotic substances has been reported at more than Rs. 3,565 crore. Meanwhile, the campaign against illegal and spurious liquor registered 2,89,282 cases, and the estimated value of the seizures exceeded Rs. 576 crore. The police also secured convictions in 13,257 liquor-related cases.

Communication between the police and ordinary citizens has also become an important component of an effective security system. To this end, the police regularly interacted with 21,32,467 citizens through the C-Plan App. A total of 1,88,532 police personnel are associated with the initiative.

Government has also increased assistance under various heads for the welfare of police personnel responsible for maintaining law and order and their families. The grant for the Sukh-Suvidha Fund has increased from Rs. 3.50 crore to Rs. 5.50 crore, while the grant for the Welfare Fund has increased from Rs. 8 crore to Rs. 10 crore. Under the Police Education Fund, the grant for scholarships for meritorious children increased from Rs. 50 lakh to Rs. 75 lakh.

Government provided a grant of Rs. 340.92 crore for medical reimbursement. For the treatment of serious illnesses, Jeevan Rakshak Nidhi approved advance assistance of Rs. 4.70 crore for 127 police personnel. The process of issuing 4,97,992 cards under the cashless treatment facility for police personnel and their dependent family members has been completed. Under the police salary package, maximum accident insurance coverage is fixed at Rs. 2.30 crore, while life insurance coverage is set at up to Rs. 20 lakh.
