Opposition Faces Backlash Over Defeat of Nari Shakti Vandan Bill

  • Women lash out at opposition for defeating the Nari Shakti Vandan Amendment Bill
  • Opposition parties accused of snatching away women’s rights
  • “Does only Dimple Yadav have the right to go to Parliament?”: Baby Rani Maurya

News Street Live, Lucknow: Following the defeat of the Nari Shakti Vandan Amendment Bill in Parliament, protests are being seen across the country. Women in Uttar Pradesh have also termed it anti-women. The bill was related to implementing 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies, and the opposition is now being accused of depriving women of their rights.

Opposition parties did not allow the Nari Shakti Vandan Amendment Bill to pass in the Lok Sabha. After this, women from political and other fields in Uttar Pradesh described it as the beginning of the opposition’s electoral defeat.

BJP women leaders stated that the entire opposition, including the Samajwadi Party and Congress, only wants women from their own families to enter the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies. They alleged that these parties are driven by dynastic politics and will face consequences in the upcoming elections for denying the rights of “half the population.”

According to women leaders, the opposition is uneasy due to the welfare schemes for women being implemented by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. They also claimed that the bill is not against Muslim women. It was during Prime Minister Modi’s tenure that Muslim women were freed from the regressive practice of triple talaq.

Statements

“The anti-women face of Congress and the Samajwadi Party has been exposed. Why does Akhilesh Yadav not want to see women in Parliament? Do only members of the Yadav family, like Dimple Yadav, have the right to go to Parliament? Shouldn’t ordinary women of the country and Uttar Pradesh also have this right?”-Baby Rani Maurya, Minister, Uttar Pradesh Government

“Today, the President of the country is a woman, and women are serving in many top positions, contributing to the nation’s development. The amount of work Prime Minister Modi has done for women’s welfare is unprecedented. Muslim women have been freed from the regressive practice of triple talaq. Now, when the time came to ensure 33% representation for women in Parliament, the opposition revealed its anti-women stance.”-Vijay Lakshmi Gautam, Minister, Uttar Pradesh Government

“The opposition seems to have made it its basic behavior to obstruct the vision of India that Prime Minister Modi has envisioned and is working toward. The Samajwadi Party is already uneasy with the schemes launched by Chief Minister Yogi for women, and if reservation were granted, it would have helped realize the Prime Minister’s vision of a strong India. The opposition and Akhilesh Yadav do not want to see that happen.”-Rajni Tiwari, Minister, Uttar Pradesh Government

“When a woman is empowered, it strengthens not just her family but society as a whole, leading to all-round development. Increased participation of women in Parliament would accelerate the country’s development immensely – something the opposition and Akhilesh Yadav are unwilling to accept. What would happen to their dynastic politics then? That is why they are opposing it.”-Aditi Singh, BJP MLA
