Over 1,000 Gamblers Pledge Reform in Agra Police Initiative
Lucknow: In a unique effort to combat gambling addiction, the Agra Police have launched an initiative encouraging offenders to pledge reform and commit to a law-abiding life. Over 1,000 individuals previously involved in illegal card games and betting have signed oaths and submitted written agreements at police stations across the city.
Many participants, like 42-year-old Ravi Kishore, had faced legal consequences and financial burdens due to their gambling habits. Kishore, after spending time in jail, hopes this initiative will help him “lead a better life.”
Fathers like Shezad expressed concern about their children being negatively influenced and are determined to break the cycle for their families.
Agra Police Commissioner J Ravinder Goud conceived the initiative, recognizing the multifaceted impact of gambling, including public disturbances, violent disputes, and family suffering caused by debt.
Goud aims to offer a “dignified chance to reform” by providing support and monitoring after the initial pledge. Reformed individuals may even be involved in tackling future gambling networks and promoting community policing.
Social activist Vikas Kumar hails the initiative as a step towards “restorative justice,” potentially addressing high recidivism rates associated with traditional punishments.
Long-term effectiveness will depend on sustained support, monitoring, and addressing the underlying factors that led to gambling addiction, he said.
