Lucknow: In a heartbreaking turn of events on Valentine’s Day, tragedy struck the village of Kanera in Kotwali Charkhari, Mahoba , where a young couple, deeply in love, ended their lives by consuming poison.
Lovers, identified as Ramesh (20) and a neighbouring student Shanti (19) had been involved in a clandestine relationship for quite some time, the police said.
Ramesh, a BA student at Government College Charkhari, and his girlfriend Shanti harboured dreams of marriage but concealed their relationship due to societal and familial pressures.
Their love, veiled in secrecy, reached a tragic climax when they had planned to meet at five in the morning on Valentine’s Day, said the police.
However, consumed by fear of societal repercussions, the girlfriend ingested poison at her home, setting off a chain of tragic events. Upon learning of her desperate act, Ramesh, in a state of anguish, also consumed a lethal dose of some poisonous substance, the police said.
“Villagers, upon discovering Ramesh’s distress near a culvert, promptly alerted his family. Rushing to his aid, they found him writhing in pain and immediately rushed him to the hospital. It was then that Ramesh disclosed the harrowing truth – his beloved had also consumed poison and lay unconscious on the terrace of her house,” said SHO, Charkhari, GB Gupta.
Efforts to save the young couple proved futile. Ramesh was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Community Health Center in Charkhari, while the girlfriend, in critical condition, was referred to the district hospital. Tragically, she succumbed to the poisonous substance, Gupta added.
Police Circle Officer, Charkhari, Harshita Gangwar, said that prima facie evidence points to a love affair gone awry, resulting in the tragic suicides. Investigations are ongoing, with authorities awaiting the post-mortem report to ascertain the precise cause of death. “Both belonged to the same caste and were distant relatives,” she said.
