Lawyer shot dead by miscreants in Sultanpur

Lucknow: An advocate in his early 30s was shot dead in Sultanpur late on Sunday. His brother who sustained gunshot injuries is admitted to KGMU Trauma Centre in Lucknow.

The deceased was identified as Azad Ahmad who practised in the civil court of Sultanpur while his injured brother Munawwar worked as a property dealer. Soon after the incident, lawyers reached Kotwali Dehat police station of the district demanding the arrest of the accused. Police said that both the victims have criminal cases against them, and five teams have been made to arrest the accused.

Narrating the sequence of events, Dehat Kotwali SHO Anirudh Kumar Singh said that around 9.15 pm, they received a call on UP 112 that unidentified assailants in an SUV reached Nekrahi crossing where the advocate was sitting with his brother and having tea.

“We were informed that four-five armed assailants alighted from the SUV and they had a verbal spat which turned ugly when one of the assailants opened two rounds of fire on Ahmad who fell on the ground. Later, two shots were also fired upon Munawwar before the miscreants escaped,” said Singh.

A police team arrived at the scene and immediately got them admitted to a nearby hospital where Ahmad was declared brought dead while doctors referred Munawwar to KGMU Trauma Centre in Lucknow, said the police.

As news spread, scores of lawyers assembled at the scene demanding the arrest of the accused at the earliest. A dog squad along with a team of experts reached the spot to gather clues. As many as six rounds were fired, the police said.

Sultanpur superintendent of police Somen Barma said, “Based on preliminary inquiry, the role of one Siraj, a property dealer, has surfaced in the murder case.”

“Siraj who is a history-sheeter used to work with Munawwar in the past and reportedly broke out after an FIR was lodged against the two. Siraj used to think that Munawwar’s brother was an advocate and that he would easily come out from the clutches of law while he might face action,” said SP Barma. Barma said that police will look at all the aspects of the crime.
