Yogi government’s directions drive statewide campaign to strengthen consumer protection during festivals

Under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the Uttar Pradesh Government is committed to protecting consumer interests during festivals and ensuring a transparent trading system in the market. In view of major festivals such as Diwali, Govardhan Puja, Bhai Dooj and Chhath, the special inspection campaign of the Legal Metrology Department has been intensified across the state to curb short weighing, charging prices higher than the Maximum Retail Price (MRP) printed on packaged commodities, and irregularities related to weights and measures.

This intensive campaign, which commenced on October 26, 2026, will continue until October 31 during the first phase. Thereafter, statewide inspections will be conducted during the second phase from November 2 to 5, 2026. The objective of the campaign is to protect consumers’ rights amid increased festival-season shopping and ensure action, in accordance with the prescribed rules, against commercial establishments violating the regulations.

Under the directions of Aman Deep Duli, Controller, Legal Metrology, departmental teams are active in all districts of the state. Deputy Controllers, Assistant Controllers, Senior Inspectors and Inspectors are conducting regular inspections as well as surprise inspections in markets to effectively curb practices whereby consumers are charged unfairly by taking advantage of the festival rush.

Special monitoring of 6 key sectors

Under the campaign, 6 key sectors witnessing increased demand during festivals have been brought under special scrutiny.

Sweets and gift packs: Checks are being conducted to identify instances of short weighing, such as charging customers extra by including the weight of the box along with that of the sweets. The declarations printed on gift hampers are also being verified.

LPG cylinders: The actual quantity of gas in domestic and commercial LPG cylinders is being checked to prevent irregularities such as the supply of less gas than the prescribed quantity.

Edible oil and ghee: The declared net quantity and printed price on packaged edible oil and ghee packets and tins are being verified.

Flour, refined flour and semolina: Inspections are being conducted to ensure that the actual quantity in packets and sacks corresponds to the declared weight.

Jewellery establishments:
Electronic weighing scales and other weights and measures instruments used to weigh jewellery in bullion and jewellery markets are being checked for verification and the validity of their seals.

Paint establishments: The declared quantity and price printed on paint containers used for home decoration and painting are being checked.

The Uttar Pradesh Government aims to ensure that ordinary citizens do not face any fraud, short weighing or unfair overcharging while shopping during festivals. This campaign by the Legal Metrology Department is an important step towards promoting fair trading practices in the market, strengthening consumer confidence and ensuring compliance with prescribed standards.

During the campaign, departmental teams are inspecting weights and measures instruments, mandatory declarations on packaged commodities, and compliance with rules relating to declared quantities and prices. Wherever irregularities are found, action will be taken under the relevant provisions. The government’s objective is to ensure that the people of the state celebrate festivals in an environment of trust, transparency and safe shopping.
