The Central Government introduced a bill in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday related to the appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioners, sparking a political storm. Mamata Banerjee criticized the bill and took aim at the Modi government, stating that the BJP has descended into lawlessness and disrespects the judiciary. West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee tweeted that the role of the CJI in the three-member panel for the appointment of the CEC this week is crucial. We strongly oppose replacing the CJI with a Cabinet Minister in the selection of the Election Commissioner. She further stated that this process could lead to inconvenience and manipulation of votes, causing harm. She emphasized the need to question India’s severe negligence towards the judiciary and urged the judiciary to save our country.
