Fog pileup on Yamuna eway kills man headed home

Lucknow: A man died and nine others were injured after a truck, bus and two cars piled up on the Yamuna Expressway amid dense fog around Friday midnight.

A team from Jewar police station rushed to the spot – 30km mark – after receiving a call from a passerby.

“The accident occurred near the 30km mark on the carriageway leading to Agra. When the police team reached there, some 10 people were found bleeding from their wounds. All of them were taken to a hospital, where one was declared dead on arrival,” a senior officer said.

The man who died was Satyaprakash, a daily wager who was headed home in Etawah. He had stepped out of his bus when a WagonR ploughed into him.

“He was in the bus that had crashed into a truck that suddenly slammed the brakes in fog. All those injured were passengers of the bus. Satyaprakash, who was relatively stable, got off the bus to see the impact of the accident when a car rammed him,” the officer said.

After the WagonR crashed into Satyaprakash and the bus, another car rammed it from behind.

Those admitted to hospital with injuries were Pradeep, Ram, Saurabh and Rahul (from Auraiya), Shivam and Ayesha (from Etawah), Yash (Mainpuri), Devendra (Kanpur) and Pushpa (Kannauj).

Police said though visibility was reduced to merely a few metres in the fog, they lodged a case of rash driving and causing death by negligence against the WagonR driver.

Speed limits on expressways and highways have been reduced till February 15 because of foggy conditions. In some places, traffic police have placed reflective tapes and signage to help drivers navigate.

On January 14, two truck drivers died and six others were injured when 10 vehicles piled up on the Eastern Peripheral Expressway in dense fog. On December 27 last year, 12 vehicles piled up on the Noida-Agra carriageway of the Yamuna Expressway near Dayanatpur village. There were no casualties.
