UP, Raj cops rescue man abducted outside Gzb court on wedding day
5 Held From Jhunjhunu; Among Them Woman’s Brother Who Opposed Marriage
Lucknow: Five people were arrested from Rajasthan’s Jhunjhunu for allegedly abducting a 30-year-old man from outside the Ghaziabad district collectorate, minutes before he was supposed to get married in court to the sister of one of them.
Mahendra Kumar, a daily wager in Sikar of Rajasthan, had developed a liking for the sister of Shubham Kumar (22), a civil contractor in the area. After a few months of courtship, the two decided to get married.
But there was one hurdle. The woman’s family was strictly against their relationship.
So, Mahendra and his 25-year-old girlfriend left Sikar on Wednesday and decided on a court marriage in Ghaziabad the next morning.
When Shubham came to know that the two had left for Ghaziabad, he hatched a plan to abduct Mahendra before he could get married to his sister. Shubham also filed a missing person’s complaint at Sikar police station and accused Mahendra of kidnapping his sister.
Dinesh P Kumar, additional police commissioner, said Shubham and his four friends came from Sikar in their car and left it by the roadside in Duhai. From there, some of them hired a cab to go to the district collectorate, where the two had planned to get married in court.
“The accused waited for them in the cab. Just as they saw Mahendra, they overpowered him and bundled him into the car. As Shubham’s sister shouted for help, the accused sped away with Mahendra,” Kumar said.
Mahendra’s girlfriend wasted no time in dialling the police helpline. What followed was an example of meticulous tracking and coordination between the police forces of three states – UP, Haryana and Rajasthan.
“We questioned the cab driver first and came to know that they had boarded a Swift Dzire in Duhai and headed towards the Eastern Peripheral Expressway. We checked CCTV footage and found the claim to be true. Cops in Haryana and Rajasthan were put on alert and the car’s number was shared with them,” the officer said.
A team from Sikar police station reached Shubham’s house on Thursday, but he was not there. “They took his phone number and started tracing it. A police team followed the phone’s location and arrested Shubham and the others from Jhunjhunu. Mahendra was rescued too,” Kumar said.
Apart from Shubham, the four others who were arrested were Rajendra Kumar (21), Aakash Meharia (21), Vijay (20) and Dalip (20), all from Sikar.
They were booked under Section 364 (kidnapping or abducting in order to murder) of the IPC following a complaint lodged by Shubham’s sister at Sihani Gate police station. The car in which Mahendra was abducted was also recovered.
Police said they were questioning Shubham and his friends to find out if they were planning to kill Mahendra.
